The Best Graphics Cards To Buy In 2023

by headtr1p, September 11 2023

The release of the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT has given us a clearer picture of the GPU landscape in 2023. Current-gen cards haven't exactly wowed consumers in terms of performance uplift and value, but there are some solid deals to be found if you do enough digging. Now is also a good time to consider previous-gen cards, as Nvidia and AMD are slashing prices to clear older inventory.

Great High-End Deal: Radeon RX 7900 XTX

While not quite on the level of the RTX 4090, the RX 7900 XTX is a behemoth at 4K and comfortably exceeds 100 FPS average. With the exception of ray tracing, AMD's flagship goes neck and neck with the RTX 4080, a card that is going for $150 more. This card is still wildly expensive but remains our value pick at the high-end.

The RTX 4070 Ti did also come to mind, but we're not sure how long 12GB of VRAM will hold up. You should be getting a minimum of 16GB VRAM, especially if you're spending this much money on a GPU.

Great Midrange Deal: Radeon RX 7800 XT

The RX 7800 XT is undoubtedly the best bang for buck current-gen card. At $499 it already presents superb value, but with the Starfield game bundle included it's a no-brainer. With 16GB VRAM on a 256-bit interface, the RX 7800 XT is a midrange powerhouse, averaging 120FPS at 1440p and 70FPS at 4K. This card manages to beat the GeForce RTX 4070 in rasterisation, an impressive feat when you consider Nvidia's card is $100 more.

While there is only a 3% uplift over its predecessor, the RX 6800 XT, it does boast RDNA 3 benefits like improved efficiency and support for AV1 hardware encode and decode. The Starfield bundle is mostly sold out on Newegg, but you can still grab it by heading to the Amazon promotion page.

Good Midrange Deal: Radeon RX 6800 XT

The RX 6800 XT is another midrange gem from the previous-gen RDNA 2 lineup. The price of $499.99 is a whopping $150 below its MSRP of $649. This card went toe to toe with the almighty GeForce RTX 3080. It was able to match the RTX 3080 in rasterisation at a much lower price, while Team Green had the lead in ray tracing and upscaling.

The RX 6800 XT has aged like a fine wine with its 16GB VRAM and 256-bit interface, while the RTX 3080's 10GB VRAM won't hold up for much longer at high resolutions.

Great Low-End Deal: Radeon RX 7600

The RX 7600 is a card that is only around 5% slower than the RTX 4060 at $50 less. It's more than capable at 1080p, pushing out over 90 FPS with better performance than the previous-gen RX 6600 XT. While the RTX 4060 does have better energy efficiency and upscaling, the RX 7600 cannot be beat as a purely bang for buck 1080p card.

Good Low-End Deal: GeForce RTX 4060

If you're looking for a solid 1080p card then the RTX 4060 is a great option. It offers a respectable 20% improvement on the RTX 3060 and is only around 7% behind the RTX 3060 Ti.

The reason we're not recommending the RTX 4060 Ti cards is because we think they're akwardly placed between 1080p and 1440p. The RTX 4060 is much better bang for buck at 1080p, while the RX 7800 XT or RX 7700 XT presents better value at 1440p. When you compare the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB model to AMD's midrange cards, it's a bit of a head-scratcher. It seems senseless to pay $449 for the 4060 Ti when you can get the RX 7800 XT for $50 more, a card that offers an uplift of over 30%. Likewise the RX 7700 XT has an advantage of 15% at the same price.
